NCFM members cooperate to create stunning new work
NCFM members Christine Meyer-Eaglestone and Designer Makers Furniture have worked together to make the Circles and Stripes sideboard, an exceptional piece tht highlights Christine's marquetry skills and the innovative making of Designer Makers Furniture.
Christine, who originally trained in fine art, cuts and lays her work entirely by hand, responding to the piece as it develops and using her extensive collection of veneers as an artist might use his palette. She works with great accuracy, even on a large piece like this.
Christine created the decorative marquetry panels then layed them on 18mm substrate, then Designer Makers took over. They cut up the panels along perset lines, mitred all the corners and assembled the L shaped pieces. Extreme accuracy was required here as any misalignment of the stripes or circles would spoil the piece. The L's were then bolted to the drawer carcase using captive threads on the inner faces of the L shapes.
The completed piece, called Circles and Stripes, has already been exhibited at the Celebration of Craft and Design in Cheltenham where is attracted much comment. There is now the opportunity to see it in Yorkshire as it will be shown at the upcoming NCFM exhibition at Tennants Auction centre in Leyburn. It can also be seen at the Liverpool Design Show (www.liverpooldesignfestival.com) from 7th - 9th October.
More information on the making of this piece can be found at http://www.christribe.co.uk/blog/a-speculative-piece/00090.html
